I previously posted a track from Tilly and the Wall some time ago which I still listen to this day and get the same feeling that I did the first time I heard it. Realising this fact makes me content because it hopefully reaffirms the notion that the songs I post on this blog will live on long after I end up no longer updating it. Well here’s another that I hope to see have the same longevity as “Rainbows in the Dark“. It has a beat thats hot enough to grace any dance or hip hop dance floor. It’s positively hot. Check it out.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends

It feels kind of pointless recommending tracks off Coldplay’s new album as it’s more then likely that everyone will eventually hear it on their own accord anyway, but I do feel somewhat compelled on this occasion after getting my hands on Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. I’ve only played through it a couple of times but already I know this will be an album I’ll have on repeat for quite some time. After hearing the first couple of tracks released as singles (“Violet Hill” and the fantastic “Viva La Vida”) it was easy to see that this album was going to be far different in mood then their previous, X&Y. Whereas “Parachutes” and “A Rush of Blood to the Head” had a more stripped down production and organic feel to the tracks, X&Y was far more layered, sometimes overpowering you with complex sounds and deep imagery. “Viva La Vida…” is a welcome step back from this, with more varied use of instrumentation and tempo creating a feel thats overall lighter in tone, more flowing and comfortable then X&Y, and more enjoyable as a result.

The first track I’m going to share was one of those Coldplay songs that sends shivers down your spine whenever you hear it. Similar to Chris Martin’s production in Jay-Z’s “Beach Chair” off the album “Kingdom Come”, this track has a massive landscape, and it immediately hits you with its organ-lined beat, booming bass and epic sounds.

The second track is an example of the positive, hopeful tone you’ll hear throughout the album and features a running piano moving the song along with an upbeat rhythm (that for some reason reminded me of Let Loose’s “Crazy For You” …but don’t let that be off-putting) and once again, a large sonic landscape (which we can most likely pin down to Brian Eno’s influence in production) created by building, echoing guitars lining the background. There are several other gems dotted throughout the album so (needless to say), make sure you check it out.

Whisky a Go Go – Cracks in the Ceiling

This is a track from a band in Leicester, UK who may or may not still be active. They were actually briefly under the management of my flatmate Dave from university (which is why I probably can no longer find any info about them anywhere ). They won a couple of the Battle of the Band competitions around the area and made an EP called “Cracks in the Ceiling” from which I managed to salvage a song from which I simply call “Track 1″ as I don’t actually know what the title is. I’m glad I can share this song because there pretty much would be no way for people to get to listen to it otherwise. It’s a brilliant recording, very pure and stripped down with good vocals and nice acoustic sounds.
