Kina Grannis is someone I discovered some years ago on the site Digg.com when the site creator Kevin Rose spoke about her on the video podcast Diggnation. She made a rather cringe-worthy song dedicated to the site which got a lot of diggs (votes) providing her with plenty of exposure. A couple of years later and another story was posted on Digg about a new single and video announced from her called “Valentine” (released at an appropriate time) which is one of those tracks that I feel compelled to share. This song is an incredibly infectious little ditty, and has echoes of the demo version of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” which I posted some time ago, with its incredibly laid back and stripped down sound. The previews of the other tracks I heard from the album on her homepage sound beautifully produced and with a really organic sound, reminisent of the album Coco from Colbie Caillat I’ve blogged profusely about previously. This song flows easily over the air with it’s summery, mellow sound and if this track is any indication of what the rest of the album may sound like, I’m intently waiting on hearing it.

I heard this track on my own recommended station on Last.fm which I recommend highly because if you like the music that you’ve heard on this blog then you’ll definately like the tracks they play there. To this day, no matter how many times I am bored with my own collection of music and decide to pop on that station, I end up finding so much great music that leads me to new artists so I recommend you check it out. As I’ve said, this is a track I heard on that very station and it lead me to seek out the album of this artist which I’ve found to be of similar quality but none were quite as catchy, as seemily organic and as joyus as this song. It starts off with a gentle and honest tone but picks up halfway through with a bouncy acoustic guitar rhythm that hits you where it matters and resonates through your body like every good new track you hear should. Check it out.

I discovered both these tracks from the late artist Elliott Smith some time ago but was recently reacquainted with the song Angeles after hearing it randomly from a great cut-and-paste album called Prime Cuts by audio bytes for autobots (download here or stream here). Bit of a strange connection but I’m glad I came across it again as I managed to get hold of his album Either/Or from which these two tracks I’m going to share are taken. Angeles is a beautifully stripped-down track that incredibly mellow and hazy. It’s easy to see the artists today that have been influenced by him such as Joshua Radin and José González.

The rest of the album plays to a similar ambiance including this track which is slightly tongue-in-cheek (“I could be another fool/or an exception to the rule/you tell me the morning after”) and lighter in mood then the other tracks on Either/Or. If you like what you hear I definitely recommend checking out the rest of the album.

Another discovery from the awesome-o Pandora.com. I got this track by listening to my own created radio page for songs similar to the track “Michael Tolcher – Sooner or Later” so if you want to hear similar tracks, put that one in – I guarantee you’ll find something great. One name that kept popping up on this channel was Jeffrey Gaines who’s a male singer-songwriter with a really soulful voice. I managed to get my hands on one of his most popular tracks (which turned out to be a cover by Peter Gabriel) and it’s easy to see why. It’s a really heartfelt track which feels very hopeful and positive.
